Part 13. Polimaster begins its participation in the STC Program
The Securing the Cities (STC) Program is a five-year program managed by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), specifically the Countering Weapons of Mass Destruction (CWMD) Office. The program seeks to reduce the risk of a successful deployment of a radiological/nuclear terrorist weapon against a major metropolitan area in the United States by establishing sustainable capability within Global Nuclear Detection Architecture partner agencies to detect, analyze, and report unauthorized attempts to import, possess, store, develop, or transport radiological or nuclear materials.
These goals are achieved through the deployment of detection equipment to monitor radiological and nuclear threats and training for local, state, and federal agencies to improve detection and response capabilities. The program facilitates collaboration among various agencies, including local law enforcement, public safety agencies, and federal partners, integrating detection equipment and protocols across jurisdictions to ensure a cohesive and comprehensive security network. It offers funding to participating cities for the procurement of detection equipment, training, exercises, and other related activities, supporting the establishment and maintenance of detection and interdiction programs within urban areas.
Initially launched in New York City in 2006, the program has expanded to include other major cities across the United States, such as Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., and Chicago, targeting high-risk urban areas where the consequences of a radiological or nuclear incident could be particularly severe. Additionally, the STC program encourages public awareness and engagement to help communities understand the importance of radiological and nuclear threat detection and prevention and partners with local organizations and stakeholders to enhance community resilience.
Polimaster began its participation in the STC Program in 2015, starting with supplying our products to the City of Los Angeles and expanding to other cities. During this involvement, Polimaster provided essential radiation detection equipment to help establish a foundational detection and prevention infrastructure in participating cities. Its advanced devices, such as the personal radiation detectors (PRDs), were among the first tools used by law enforcement and public safety agencies to detect and identify radiological and nuclear threats. Alongside the deployment of detection equipment, Polimaster provided extensive training to ensure that users were well-versed in operating the devices effectively. The company worked closely with the DHS and local agencies to integrate their technology into existing security frameworks and protocols.
Polimaster significantly contributed to the STC program’s mission of enhancing national security by providing advanced radiation detection technologies and comprehensive support, which helped to build a strong foundation for the program’s ongoing success
As we celebrate the 20th anniversary of Polimaster, Inc. in 2024, we reflect on a journey marked by pioneering innovations and strong partnerships.
