Part 15. DHS CWMD awards $6.7M contract for U.S. Coast Guard
In 2020, the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) Countering Weapons of Mass Destruction Office (CWMD) issued a $6.7M task order to acquire 2,364 Polimaster next-generation personal radiation detectors (PRDs) for the U.S. Coast Guard. The contract was awarded under an existing agreement with William F. Hawk Consulting.
CWMD is the primary DHS office for counter-WMD efforts, supporting federal, state, and local partners in detecting and managing chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear (CBRN), and health security threats. CWMD focuses on enhancing the detection, interdiction, response, and reporting capabilities of domestic law enforcement and first responders for CBRN threats.
CWMD announced an initial contract for maritime variant PRDs in July 2020, covering 3,001 devices and related training. These detectors were specifically designed for maritime environments to identify radiological and nuclear threats.
The PRDs, which are typically small devices worn by operators, detect radiological and nuclear threats. Because standard PRDs face challenges in maritime conditions, these PRDs, specifically designed for maritime environments, overcome the limitations of standard detectors and provide reliable threat detection both at sea and on land. The U.S. Coast Guard uses these adapted PRDs to monitor both maritime and land environments for changes in natural radiation levels, alerting users if the radiation level in the sea exceeds natural levels and helping to locate the threat [Source: DHS GOV].
Polimaster is honored to provide our maritime PRDs to the U.S. Coast Guard and DHS CWMD and contribute to enhancing their capability to detect and respond to radiological and nuclear threats. By alerting users of elevated radiation levels, Polimaster PRDs enable swift threat localization and response, thus, improving operational efficiency and safety. This deployment upheld the CWMD’s mission to support federal, state, and local partners in countering chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and health security threats, strengthening the overall national security framework.
